Located in the Quindio department a few kilometers east of the typical, colorful village of Salento, and southwest of the Los Nevados National Natural Park, Cocora Valley ranks among Colombia's most beautiful natural sites. Characterized by its stunning wax palms that seem to touch the clouds and numerous coffee plantations, Cocora Valley is an absolute must-see on any trip to Colombia ! Here's what you need to know…
Meeting the world's tallest palms
Cocora Valley is part of the zona cafetera, or Colombia's coffee region. Coffee cultivation therefore forms an integral part of the landscape. But what truly sets this place apart is the presence of giant palms. An endemic species of Colombia, the wax palms of Quindio (Ceroxylon quindiuense) are the tallest palms in the world. Capable of reaching nearly 80 meters in height and living up to 100 years, wax palms thrive in a particular climate: unlike most palm species, these palms easily withstand the cold, rain, and mist that envelop them almost daily. It's one of the rare places on earth where you can see palms thriving in mountain terrain !
These palms, official symbols of the country, were long used for extracting wax from their bark for artisanal crafts such as candlemaking. But after facing extinction threats, wax palms are now protected by the Colombian government.
How to visit Cocora Valley ?
Expeditions to Cocora Valley depart from a charming little village of colonial architecture with the delightful name of Salento. Located 10km from the valley, this is where you'll find curious jeeps that allow visitors easy access to the valley's trailheads. These jeeps called Willys and nicknamed 'mechanical mules', are former American military jalopies converted into vehicles for transporting goods or passengers !
Once you arrive at Cocora Valley, you can venture out along the hiking and trekking trails, or undertake an excursion on horseback or by mountain bike ! Two options are available for reaching the viewpoints: the short loop or the long loop. In the first case, it's a short hike of less than 5 km, roughly two hours round trip. The route takes you to Finca La Esperanza before reaching the two viewpoints at the summit. In the second case, we're talking more of a trek. Covering 12km, this trail will take you across the valley plains to the viewpoints, passing through humid forests. You'll cross a few streams and traverse suspended bridges overlooking the river before arriving at the famous House of Hummingbirds where you can observe numerous species of the world's tiniest bird ! Then you'll descend back to Finca La Esperanza before finally returning to the valley entrance. Plan for approximately 6 hours of walking.
For those who prefer not to hike, it's still possible to reach the bosque de las palmas directly without much effort. In any case, prioritize early morning outings as rain is more frequent in the afternoon. Wear sturdy shoes, bring rain gear and some cash to access certain areas.
