Packing your suitcase is a crucial step in organizing a vacation abroad. If you're an experienced traveler, you've likely already categorized your belongings by type: clothing, documents, wallet, toiletries, first aid kit, electronics, hiking gear, beach outfits, snacks, toys...

There are, however, a few precautions to take if you decide to travel to Colombia. Forgetting your raincoat while crossing the Llanos, leaving behind a snorkel while heading to Islas Rosario, or neglecting to pack hiking boots when planning to explore the eastern part of the country could result in unexpected expenses. You'll need to be thorough when making your packing list. What you pack depends entirely on which region you plan to visit.

A Quick Checklist for Packing Your Bags

  • Clothing: depends on the region you're visiting
  • Documents: your passport, copies of your passport, ID cards, travel insurance…
  • Wallet: budget according to your stay, plan for unexpected costs, set a limit for souvenirs
  • Toiletries: soap, shampoo, towel, sunscreen, hygiene products,...
  • First aid kit: bandages, regular medications, mosquito repellent, antimalarial prophylaxis,...
  • Electronics: adapters for types A and B outlets, smartphones, camera, selfie stick, waterproof bags,...
  • Hiking gear: shoes, appropriate attire, walking stick, binoculars, water bottles,...
  • Beach outfits: swimsuit, snorkel, dive goggles, sunglasses,...
  • Snack bag: a small bag for trail snacks
  • Children's toys: coloring book, markers, a few toys,...

Your Suitcase for a Trip to Northern Colombia

The entire northern coast of the country is lined with white sandy beaches caressed by the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea. To make the most of your vacation in Cartagena, Santa Marta, or Tayrona National Park, don't forget to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, a cap, or a hat. Given the heat there, it's best to bring lightweight cotton clothing, t-shirts, shorts, and sandals. The region's coral reefs are truly magnificent. You wouldn't want to miss this spectacular sight by neglecting to bring your mask, snorkel, and swimsuit.

Some details may seem minor, but can sometimes make a difference. Pack a waterproof plastic bag to store electronic items when you visit the beach. No one is immune to a small mishap, especially when traveling with children. If you want to explore Tayrona National Natural Park, also bring a pair of hiking shoes.

So, plan to bring:

  • Clothing: lightweight, cotton, beach-appropriate, and sandals
  • Beach outfits: swimsuits, towels, snorkel, dive goggles, hat
  • Toiletries: sunscreen, soap, shampoo
  • Hiking gear: hiking shoes, water bottle

Your Suitcase for a Trip to Central and Eastern Colombia

It's slightly cooler in central Colombia, particularly in cities like Bogotá, Medellín, Villa de Leyva, Mompox, Chingaza, Neiva, Pereira, Armenia, Salento, and Santa Rosa de Cabal. Pack relatively lightweight clothing, long-sleeved garments, and your hiking equipment.

Even though it warms up again in the Llanos region, showers frequently drench its plains, even during the dry season. Besides your hiking gear, don't forget to bring a raincoat.

So, plan to bring:

  • Clothing: lightweight, long-sleeved, a sweater, a raincoat
  • Equipment: hiking attire, hiking shoes, walking stick, water bottle
  • First aid kit: mosquito repellent, adhesive tape, cotton, disinfectant, regular medications with prescriptions.
