Comuna 13: tourism in Colombie for social transformation

  Medellin and Its Popular Neighborhoods

This popular neighborhood was once one of the most dangerous and violent areas of the metropolis, the domain of Medellin drug cartels. Today, and since 2011, thanks to the installation of the metrocable, Medellin is reborn. This escalator system eases mobility throughout the city and job access for populations perched on the city's hillsides. The invisible borders between neighborhoods fade and the population can breathe again.

This transformation, largely enabled by local institutional projects, must primarily be credited to neighborhood residents who came together around grassroots initiatives. These are predominantly artistic in nature, unveiling primarily peace graffiti, forming part of Medellin's street art.

This new activity in the area continues to attract tourists, growing in number daily.

Today, it is a must-see visit that allows travelers accompanied by a local guide to understand the various issues of the past and the challenges for the future.

The social projects and urban initiatives put in place by social communities in this Medellin neighborhood provide a perfect overview of the city's transformation: dynamic and creative.

Visiting Comuna 13, Medellin, means contributing to local economic development, understanding the country's history through concrete transformation, and most importantly, having unforgettable encounters with artists who will explain the graffiti that covers the neighborhood's walls, all to the captivating rhythm of street dancers' movements.

The Moravia neighborhood of Medellin

  Medellin and Its Popular Neighborhoods

An emblematic neighborhood of the city belonging to Comuna 4, Moravia had been since 1977 an open-air public landfill.

It gradually became populated by former farmers, driven from their lands by armed conflict. With nowhere else to shelter, victims of forced displacement began settling on its edges, then, for lack of space, they established themselves directly on the landfill itself.

A few years later, authorities, for obvious sanitary reasons, attempted to close the zone. However, in the absence of a resettlement policy, inhabitants who had invested themselves in the space remained and the neighborhood continued developing around and atop the waste.

The early 2000s marked the implementation of a project aimed at limiting gas emissions and decontaminating the area, followed by a territorial planning scheme.

Today, the landfill is history, making way for gardens and vegetable patches notably through the project Medellín Florece para la Vida (Moravia Blooms for Life).

Do not overlook this authentic Medellin neighborhood, rich in cultural diversity and community initiatives. Like Comuna 13, it is recommended to visit with a local guide who will passionately convey the evolution of this place.
